The Bible Wasn’t Written in English

Bible Snippets Series

The title pretty much says it all.

When I’m reading the Bible, it’s helpful to remember that the original language for the Bible was NOT English:

Old Testament = Hebrew

New Testament = Greek

It’s good to remember that all the chapter breaks and section titles are artificial, helpful guideposts. As I’ve paid more attention to close reading, I find the footnotes particularly helpful, especially when they point out the uncertainty of a specific phrase that we see in our English versions.

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

Here the [c] says: “Many early manuscripts do not have If God is glorified in him.

Re-reading it without the phrase is helpful to me. My brain doesn’t need to track with this conditional statement. I like that by omitting it, I can more simply take away: God is glorified in the Son, who is in himself.

I have a 1984 NIV version of the Bible, and sometimes it has differences from the more up-to-date NIV version.

John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God[a]; trust also in me.
John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me.

The second one is the 2011 update. My bible has a footnote that explains:

[a]: “Or You trust in God.

The older version reads: “hey disciples! Trust in God (the Father). Also trust in me (Jesus Christ, standing before you).”

The newer version reads: “hey disciples! If you trust in God (the Father)… well, I am God, so trust in me.”

To me, it more emphasizes that Jesus wants his disciples to understand that they can transfer their preconceived notions of who God is (OT) onto him, the embodiment on God in human form.
